Is your PR agency doing a good job?

Posted by Ruth Atherley of AHA Creative Strategies on September 25th, 2009

The Idea Grove, a Dallas-based PR agency has released an assessment quiz designed to help corporate communicators determine whether their PR agency is doing a good job for them. It’s worth a read – for both clients and those of us in agencies.

We circulated the link here at AHA and I think I might frame it and put it up over my desk. This quiz has great questions that anyone working with an agency should ask themselves and that agencies should review to make sure that they are excelling.

We have a mix of clients that we have had for years along…

What’s the value?

Posted by Ruth Atherley of AHA Creative Strategies on September 24th, 2009

There is an excellent article on computerworld.com that focuses on Twitter ROI. It’s worth a read.

At AHA, we’re often asked what the value is of social media and what the ROI will be for the organization. It’s a valid question and one that should be answered before any organization jumps into social media. We say it time and time again, while we believe that everyone should know what is being said online about their organization, their competitors, their field, their industry – not every organization should necessarily be participating. For some, there may not be any ROI.

For some organizations the ROI…

The difference between strategy and tactics

Posted by Ruth Atherley of AHA Creative Strategies on September 21st, 2009

Have you ever been in a meeting and had a client, colleague or consultant confuse “strategic” and “tactical.” I think it happens more than we realize (or perhaps like to admit) and it’s not always junior staff that don’t understand the difference.

Our friends at Beaupre have, what I think is, the best explanation of the two on their blog. It’s worth a read. (I’ve sent this link out to dozens of people).

Discussions, debates and disagreements

Posted by Ruth Atherley of AHA Creative Strategies on September 17th, 2009

Our friends at Beaupre & Co Public Relations have a great blog post about how to get the most from your PR firm. If you work with an agency or are considering an agency, it’s worth a read.

We have this discussion often at the AHA offices and with clients. For us, it’s always about how do we deliver the most to our clients. To do that, we have come to realize that our client sometimes needs to focus on how to get the most from AHA. Sometimes, it’s a learning experience for them – especially if they haven’t worked with an…

Strategy needs to drive your social media outreach

Posted by Ruth Atherley of AHA Creative Strategies on September 16th, 2009

We often get calls from communications directors and managers asking us to come in speak with them (and often their senior executive) about what they “should” be doing when it comes to social media.

When we meet, our discussion always begins with a few questions:

  • What do you want to achieve?
  • What are you doing currently to meet your objectives?
  • Who is your target audience or community?
  • How do they want to connect with you?

As you can see – there’s not a question or directive about any of the social media tools until we understand more.

In order to be strategic, you need to clearly understand…

There is no such thing as off the record!

Posted by Ruth Atherley of AHA Creative Strategies on September 15th, 2009

There has been much talk (online and off) about how Kayne West created a scene at the Video Music Awards recently. Apparently, Kayne stormed the stage when Taylor Swift was accepting her award for video of the year, grabbed the microphone and announced that he thought Beyonce should have won the award. You can read more about the incident on Rolling Stone.

Then, ABC news reporter Terry Moran tweeted that, during an interview with his network, President Obama called Kayne a “jackass” for his outburst. Turns out, the part where (allegedly) Obama called Kayne a “jackass” was off the record. ABC…

Here to stay

Posted by Ruth Atherley of AHA Creative Strategies on September 09th, 2009

We are often asked about whether social media is a fad, trend or if it is here to stay. While there may be a shift in what tools we use and how we access technology, it’s pretty safe to say that interactive communication is here to stay. There has been a huge shift in how we, as consumers, want to participate with brands, with organizations and even socially with each other.

There is a great video on YouTube that showcases some social media stats. I haven’t had a chance to verify all the stats in this video, but from the stats we…

Are you really my friend?

Posted by Ruth Atherley of AHA Creative Strategies on September 08th, 2009

We have had some very interesting discussions here at AHA about the blurring of lines between friend, colleague and boss on social media network sites.  It’s a hot topic right now and everyone has their perspective on it.  I believe that my business partner Paul and I have a pretty good working relationship with everyone on our crew.  Each of the communications professionals who work here are just that – professionals. They come in to each project and each client interaction with their “A game.” It’s not just something that we as the owners expect, it’s something that comes from…
